Our client wanted to take a stone wall in an existing derelict walled garden as the starting point for a self build eco home. The design had to be stylish and unique. It also had to meet the family’s current needs yet be flexible enough to be a home for life. Once they moved in, they wanted to have no heating bills and very low energy bills.
Our design therefore had to make sure the property was accessible and flexible enough to meet changing family needs over time. We designed using the low energy Passive House standard to make sure that no heating system was required.
The existing stone wall was carefully renovated before construction of the Passive House structure started on site.
Meeting Passive House certification was quite a challenge because of the large footprint of the house. But careful calculation (and many recalculations!) ensured that we met Passive House low energy standard. With expert off-site construction by Eden Insulation, we achieved a first airtightness rating of 0.1 and are confident of achieving full certification.
The project is still on site and is close to completion.
